J. SPENCER

Spencer's screenplays and films all share two common themes: Britishness and masculinity. But his work is more A-road pubs and dog tracks, than afternoon tea and cricket. He is dedicated to turning typically shlocky genres and low-low culture into high-high art. Spencer has numerous scripts in development and directed short films, working with talent that includes Angela Walsh (Distant Voices, Still Lives), Isobel Jesper Jones (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and Gene Gurie (Brassic).

Like Spencer's hero, screenwriter and Facebook poster Paul Schrader, he cut his teeth as a critic. With his work published in the tastemaking film magazine Little White Lies, alongside gaining a boots-on-the-ground understanding of story, he penned script coverage for production companies such as Hurricane Films and Illustrious Media.

Honing his craft under the tutelage of Colin McKeown (Ordinary Lives, Good Vibrations), Spencer has worked directly with writers like Vincent O'Connell (I.D., I.D2: Shadwell Army) formatting, proofreading and providing script notes. He has worked across a broad church of stories and a soft spot for genre films.
